Are you a new or experienced library professional ready to step into a leadership role? The Iola Public Library is seeking a dynamic and motivated Assistant Director to join our team. This full-time position offers the opportunity to grow and transition into the Library Director position within 3 to 5 years. About Us:

The Iola Public Library (IPL) is a cornerstone of the Iola community, providing diverse resources and services to individuals of all ages. Our library is committed to fostering a welcoming environment for learning, growth, and community engagement. We are looking for a future leader who will help us continue to evolve and expand our impact in the years to come. The Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS) is headquartered in the library building and uses IPL to house materials, pilot programs, and test new technology. The Director and Business Manager are currently joint employees of IPL and SEKLS. 

The Role:

As the Assistant Director, you will be a key partner to the Library Director, supporting library operations, financial management, programming, and community outreach. Over time, you will have the opportunity to transition into the Director position, taking on full leadership responsibility for managing the library’s strategic vision, staff, budget, and community relations.

This position is ideal for someone looking for a leadership track in public libraries, with the support and mentorship needed to step into the Director role in a few years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Library Director in managing day-to-day operations and provide leadership for library staff.
  • Assist with financial management, including budgeting, fundraising, and grant applications.
  • Collaborate on the development and implementation of strategic plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee collection development, circulation services, and library programming for all ages.
  • Engage with the community through outreach programs, events, and marketing efforts.
  • Work closely with the Board of Trustees, preparing reports, agendas, and assisting with Board meetings and strategic initiatives.
  • Manage staff development, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Serve as the liaison for the Friends of the Library and Iola Reads.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Library Science (MLS) or working toward it is highly desirable.
  • Experience in public library operations, with supervisory and administrative experience preferred.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, WordPress, and library management systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to occasionally travel for library-related events.
